Hôpital Albert Schweitzer

Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS) is a 200-bed hospital located in central Haiti that provides integrated hospital and community-based healthcare services. Its mission is “to collaborate with the people of the Artibonite Valley as they strive to improve their health and quality of life.”

Established in 1956 by Dr. William Larimer Mellon, Jr. and his wife Gwen Grant Mellon, HAS is a model for effective, efficient, and compassionate healthcare delivery in a challenged setting.  Currently, HAS is the only full-service hospital in the region serving more than 350,000 people through its main hospital campus and four community health centers. HAS is an economic engine in our area employing 500 people, of whom 98% are Haitian and 50% women.

Utility services are not available in rural Haiti thus HAS operates its own power grid, generates medical grade oxygen and provides clean water for the hospital and community.

Community-based care delivered through health centers, mobile clinics and a network of Community Health Workers includes:

• Malnutrition prevention, education, and screening
• Immunizations
• Reproductive health services and education
• Infectious disease prevention and treatment, including HIV/AIDS
• Clean water and well projects
• Agroforestry
