Josh Kanter Joins Alex Shahidi on The Insightful Investor: Building a Family Owners Manual

leafplanner was born out of the complexity of our founder’s family, arising from the unexpected death of his father, when Josh and his siblings could still be referred to as the rising generation. Now, almost 25 years later, and the senior generation of the family, Josh recently joined Alex Shahidi on The Insightful Investor to explore the generational issues often facing families of wealth.

In this episode, Josh discusses his own journey leading his family through navigating family dynamics, to the founding of leafplanner to educate, engage, and empower family members and the family’s advisors alike. 

Whereas the real estate industry is famous for the adage, “location, location, location,” Josh talks about the keys to success in multigenerational families of wealth, starting with “communicate, communicate, communicate.” He and Alex explore the concepts of using the family’s financial resources to support the development of the family’s other ‘capitals,’ as first described decades ago by Jay Hughes – human capital, social capital, and intellectual capital. They explore the long-term work that goes into truly creating a lasting, multigenerational family legacy – the importance of having the right advisors, of being deliberate and intentional, of understanding roles and responsibilities, learning the muscle memory to ‘change hats,’ to learn to think like a family office (and what that means), and more.
