An Innovative Approach to Achieving Net Zero with Affordable High-Speed Trains
By: Robert Green
The US DOT has been keeping me busy lately. Last month the office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) sent out an RFI for Progression to Net Zero for Rail. They are seeking comments. They have given me excellent material to use for my presentation by answering their first 2 critical questions below:
The U.S. National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization set a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the transportation sector – including rail – by 2050. This transformation to net-zero emission technologies requires coordination among all aspects of the rail supply chain, including feedstock supply, alternative fuel production, locomotive engine manufacturers, safety implementation, customer demand, and government regulation. To develop a national strategy to decarbonize the rail sector, two critical questions must be addressed:
- Which alternative rail propulsion technologies are most promising technically and economically?
- What is the timeline for the rail sector to transition to net-zero emission technologies?
Three years before these two questions were even asked, they were the subject of my successful patent activity. My question answers are simple, rely upon affordable existing technology, solve the huge infrastructure cost overruns due to unnecessary high speeds, serve the need for enough depots for passengers and are 100% carbon free from the outset. My timeline to launch of the new EMDI™ railcar train set is 2 years. ASR has high-speed rail systems people can afford and do not take a decade to build. Marketing can begin now!
